Happy Birthday, SAMU

A Dream Day in the Gulf of Orosei: Dives, Wonders, and an Unexpected Encounter!

La Caletta, August 7th – Some days start with the promise of being special, and August 7th was undoubtedly one of them. We woke up at dawn with a palpable excitement in the air and a date with the Sardinian sea that we couldn’t miss. I (Gabriele), Cecilia, Alessia, and the birthday boy of the day, Samuele, boarded our boat at 8:00 AM from the port of La Caletta, ready for an adventure to discover the wonders of the Gulf of Orosei.

The day was shaping up to be perfect: a shining sun, a light sea breeze to cool us down, and an emerald-colored sea that looked like a painting. Our crew was all set, and the excitement was through the roof, especially for Samuele, who was preparing to celebrate his birthday in the most spectacular way possible.

The coast of the Gulf of Orosei slowly unveiled itself before our eyes, a succession of towering cliffs plunging into the sea, mysterious caves, and breathtaking hidden coves. Our first stop was a pass by the famous Cala Goloritzé, a true natural monument. Admiring it from the sea, with its iconic rock arch and water so transparent it revealed every detail of the seabed, is an emotion that words can hardly describe. Although mooring is not allowed to preserve its beauty, the view alone is worth the trip.

The tour continued with dives into crystal-clear waters and lots of laughter, visiting other gems like Cala Mariolu and Cala Biriola, each with its own unique personality and charm. But the real star of our day of exploration was Cala Luna. With its crescent of golden sand and large caves offering natural shelter from the sun, it welcomed us for a longer stop. There, we could relax, snorkel among schools of curious fish, and, of course, sing “Happy Birthday” to Samuele, complete with a packed lunch that felt like a king’s feast in that setting.

We thought we had already experienced the highlight of the day, but the sea had one last, incredible surprise in store for us. During the return trip, around 5:00 PM, our captain slowed down, drawing our attention to an unusual commotion on the surface. In the distance, the water seemed to be literally boiling.

We approached cautiously, and the spectacle that unfolded before our eyes was wild and majestic: a tuna feeding frenzy! A massive school of powerful tuna was unleashing a frantic hunt, creating a vortex of splashes and spray. Seagulls and other seabirds dived in, joining the feast. It was a moment of pure adrenaline, a taste of the raw power of nature that left us all speechless. I managed to capture part of this incredible scene in a video that, I assure you, doesn’t do justice to the thrill of the moment!

We returned to La Caletta with our hearts full of gratitude and our eyes still filled with the wild beauty of Sardinia. It was a day that exceeded all expectations: the friendship, the discovery of enchanting places, and the unexpected encounter with marine life made Samuele’s birthday, and our trip, a memory we will cherish forever. Sardinia, once again, has cast its spell on us.
